The Friends meeting house

The Friends meeting house at Overton Bank, showing the newly refurbished meeting room. The land at Overton Bank was acquired in 1694 from the daughters of Gervase Gent and a meeting house was built by 1697. It was damaged by Jacobite troops in 1745. In 1770 the croft on which it stood was converted into a garden, and there was a stable block for the use of Friends who attended the meeting from a distance. Land on the north side of the meeting house was used for burials, the last taking place in 1954.

There is an open day at the Quaker Meeting House - from 12.00 to 3.00 on 11th June.

Behind the clock face of the Monument

Behind the clock face of the Monument, showing the gears that drive the hands. The right hand face looks out over the Zebra crossing and down Haywood Street, while the left hand face looks towards the Cattle Market pub.

The exhibition is still running and will be on until the end of May.

The second floor of the Westwood Clock Tower

The second floor of the Westwood Clock Tower showing the ladder that leads to the Clock room. This room looks to be used just for storage and is filled with years of stuff from the dance/performing art studio below. Some of the graffiti and posters date back over 20 years.

Music box

A carillon made by Gillett & Bland of Croydon was installed by subscription in 1874; it consists of 14 tunes, one of which was played four times in the course of each day.

Gillett & Bland also supplied bells and clock workings for Manchester Town Hall, Birmingham Art Gallery, The Royal Courts of Justice and Toronto Town Hall, Canada.

Is that a Googly

The scorers table at Leek Cricket Club, showing the view out of the window including part of the seats and pavilion. One of my Hidden views shots.

(Googly is a kind of spin delivery bowled by right arm leg spinners. A googly spins from the off to the leg side of a right handed batsman as opposed to a classic leg break spin which travels from the leg to the off side. Hence it surprises the batsman and can lead to a Leg before wicket or a bowled out).
